PhysicalThere are many different physical effects that have resulted and could potentially result from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. Some acute effects that radiation can have include vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, headaches, nausea, along with other symptoms. These symptoms are easily the least severe but are important for diagnosing someone with radiation sickness.
The long term physical effects of radiation are more lethal and harder to treat. The most common long term physical effect of radiation is thyroid cancer. Thyroid cancer is common in people with a family history of it, people over 40 years of age, and people who consistently had or have had high level radiation exposure. Radiation exposure increases your risk for thyroid cancer and can onset up to 40 years after exposure. Another long term effect that high level radiation exposure can have is mutations of the DNA or way someone/something appears. There are many examples of this in Fukushima. Many of them are on plants and animals although it can occur on humans as well. |
